Brief Description

The module aims to consolidate the skills of the Sports Therapist working in a clinical or elite/professional environment. Students will revisit a number of key skills in Sports Therapy (e.g. Sports First Aid) and develop new practical skills in the Sports Trauma Management, injury prevention and contemporary treatments for neuromusculoskeletal sports injuries. Students will also consider the ethical, professional, moral and conflict based issued arising from working in a inter/mono/multidiscipline environment.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: screening and injury prevention; sports trauma management; nutrition for sports injuries; anti-doping education; contemporary treatment methods such as KinesioTaping; travelling with teams; child protection/working with special populations including vulnerable adults.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Assess critically the external risk factors associated with neuromusculoskeletal injuries in the sports environment;
  2. Organise, synthesise and administrate neuromusculoskeletal screening for injury prevention, including the development and implementation of individual prehabilitation programmes;
  3. Evaluate critically and disseminate Anti-Doping legislation
  4. Construct and phrase questions appropriate to obtain a comprehensive subjective examination;
  5. Respond safely and effectively to Sports Trauma scenarios that may include the use of defibrillation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, medical gas administration, airway management, spinal injuries, significant bleeds and traumatic fractures and dislocations;
  6. Debate critically, defend and respond appropriately to common ethical, professional and moral dilemmas that may occur in the multi/interdisciplinary sporting environment.
