Brief Description

This module will focus on the detailed functional anatomy of the trunk and the common injuries associated with this area in the sporting environment. The theoretical basis for the use of joint mobilisations will be re-examined. Practical skills will include in-depth examination and assessment of spinal disorders, and the use of vertebral joint mobilisation as an assessment and treatment tool.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of this module will include: bony and muscular anatomy of the trunk; the nervous system; low back pain syndrome; disc pathologies; assessment of spinal dysfunction; vertebral joint mobilisations.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an in-depth of knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and function of the spine and trunk;
  2. Critically evaluate the selection of appropriate manual therapy techniques for the management of vertebral joint disorders and pathologies, and apply these safely and effectively;
  3. Explain the risk factors associated with acquired postural abnormalities, physical disabilities, illness and ageing.
  4. Apply a range of motion tests, including objective clinical measurements when required.
  5. Demonstrate the use of appropriate muscle and comparative neurological testing techniques;
  6. Apply critically appropriate manual therapy techniques for the management of vertebral joint disorders and pathologies, and apply these safely and effectively.

Both elements of assessment must be passed in order to pass the module. All assessment is non-compensatory due to PSRB.
