Brief Description

The module introduces students to the nature and methods of scientific enquiry and the ways in which they are used in the study of sport. The primary focus will be on the key issues and problems in the philosophy of science and how these apply to research in sport and exercise science. Students should have some experience and understanding of philosophy and philosophic methods prior to taking this module.

Indicative Syllabus -

The indicative module content will include the following: the nature of scientific enquiry, the relationship between science, truth and reality, an analysis of the methods of induction and deduction, key figures and their ideas in the philosophy of science, the nature and validity of social sciences, scientific models and language.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of philosophical issues and problems in science and scientific enquiry;
  2. Evaluate critically a range of approaches associated with specific issues in the philosophy of science;
  3. Synthesise their knowledge and understanding of these issues to their own expertise and familiarity with examples and practices within the sport and exercise sciences.
