Brief Description

This module will introduce students to the management of sports injuries that may occur in physical activity and sport. It examines the epidemiology and mechanisms of common sports injuries. The module will also focus on the strategies that may be used to prevent injuries developing or stop them from occurring again.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: tissue mechanics, tissue repair & remodelling; epidemiology and classification of sports injuries; examples of upper and lower limb injuries; psychological antecedents to injury; management of acute injuries; principles of rehabilitation (physical and psychological); prevention of injury.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Explain in detail the mechanical properties of soft tissues and why they fail
  2. Explain the antecedents to injury and demonstrate current understanding of rehabilitation principles in common sports injuries
  3. Analyse critically current approaches to prevention of sports injuries.
