SP6010: Biochemistry of Sport, Exercise and Health: Effects of Physical Activity

Module Title Biochemistry of Sport, Exercise and Health: Effects of Physical Activity
Module Code SP6010
Module Tutor Andrew Misiura
School Sport and Exercise
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 6
Pre-requisites None
Co-requisites None
Restrictions Cannot be counted with module SPX323
Brief Description

This module considers a range of biochemical, haematological and immunological markers of exercise induced changes in human metabolism. The context for this module is the use of blood borne/salivary markers as indicators of acute and chronic adaptations to physical activity in sport, exercise and health arenas. Both the positive and negative effects of physical activity will be considered in the context of measurable biochemical/haematological and immunological changes. This module will build on the knowledge and comprehension gained from SP4002 and the application and analysis from SP5004/SP5007. Though desirable as pre-requisites they are not essential as the module is taught from first principles.  It will include aspects of environmental and training physiology.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of this module will include: Fluid balance; Total protein, albumin & haematology. Buffers & Fatigue; Glucose, Lactate & Bicarbonate Haematology; White blood cell counts Inflammation; C-Reactive Protein & antioxidants. Adrenergic changes; Salivary a-amylase as a measure of endogenous adrenergic activity.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Explain the use of selected blood, urine and salivary biochemical markers as indicators of exercise induced changes in human metabolism.
  2. Evaluate and interpret results from biochemical, haematological and immunological measures of exercise induced changes in human metabolism.
  3. Synthesise and evaluate critically the research basis for the suitability of the chosen markers in particular exercise/physical activity contexts.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to work both independently through the formative Question Mark Perception exercises.
Learning and Teaching Activities Scheduled Contact Hours: 30
Independent Learning Hours: 120
Assessment (For further details see the Module Guide) 001: 100% Coursework: Individual, portfolio: 3000 words or equivalent
Special Assessment Requirements

Students can only gain the practical assessment marks by attending the practical work. The Virtual Learning Environment via Question Mark Perception and Moodle has strict deadlines for submission of the elements of the portfolio and marks will be awarded as follows: 20% practical skills assessment (5 x 4%); 30% online continuous assessment (5 x 6%); 50% summative assessment (2 x 25% (2 x 1000 words practical reports).
