Brief Description

This module seeks to develop the students understanding of the psychological factors that both determine and influence performance across multiple domains including sport. Acknowledging that the environment in which the performer learns and develops is crucial in determining ultimate expertise. Building on this, the module will explore critically the theoretical basis to the psychological factors that determine effective performance in a sports setting.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: the nature of expertise; decision-making; learning and developing expertise; risk-taking behaviour; challenge and threat responses; the performance environment.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical, extensive and contemporary understanding of the psychological factors determining effective performance;
  2. Explore critically the impact of psychological factors upon performance;
  3. Apply theoretically based information to enhance individual performance.
