Brief Description

This module will introduce students to the management of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) with exercise and lifestyle intervention. Students will gain detailed theoretical knowledge of the condition and will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the delivery of an evidence-based cardiac rehabilitation programme. Students who possess a Level 3 qualification in Exercise Referral may be eligible to upgrade this qualification to a BACPR Exercise Instructor award (additional charge and examination will be required).

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: cardiovascular disease physiology; risk factors for CHD and their management; phases of cardiac rehabilitation; common cardiac medications and their implications for exercise; exercise prescription for CHD; risk assessment in cardiac rehabilitation; psychological considerations of the cardiac patient; emergency procedures.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the pathophysiology of heart disease and its implications for exercise training;
  2. Plan, deliver and evaluate exercise prescription for CHD clients
  3. Evaluate critically the literature examining risk factor management in CHD;
  4. Undertake a risk assessment of a client based on the synthesis of information from their referral from a Health Professional.;
  5. Demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the psychosocial issues affecting clients with CHD.
