Brief Description

This module will consider the link between nutrition and training & competition for sport and exercise performance. Students will be able to empirically study the effect of nutritional strategies on sports and exercise performance across a range of performance types (e.g., strength, power, endurance). The efficacy of the nutritional strategies will be examined in relation to findings of previous studies. The module will be of use to students with an interest primarily in sports performance.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will allow students to critically examine: the design and delivery of sports and exercise nutrition interventions; the evidence base for sports and exercise nutrition interventions; common nutritional ergogenic aids; laboratory techniques for the collection of performance and metabolic data.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Assess critically the relationship between nutrition, training and performance;
  2. Show a critical awareness of the efficacy of a range of nutritional ergogenic aids;
  3. Appraise the key issues in designing sport and exercise nutrition studies;
  4. Evaluate critically the evidence-base presented by sport and exercise nutrition studies;
  5. Explain fully the importance of nutritional knowledge for the practicing Sport and Exercise Scientist.
