Brief Description

The aim of this module is to increase students? critical understanding of key sport and exercise psychology constructs. In particular, the module will encourage the students to examine critically the application of contemporary psychological theory to enhance the sport and exercise environment. Through practical case studies and „hands-on? experience, the student will reflect upon best practice for sport and exercise psychological practitioners, and determine how to use research appropriately to inform practice.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include the psychological determinants of: improving sport „performance?; enhancing health and well-being; exercise behaviour; exercise outcome; and psychological growth / development.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Synthesise critically contemporary and key psychological theories in order to explain sport and exercise behaviour;
  2. Evaluate critically the psychological principles of effective performance and health enhancement / development;
  3. Demonstrate the effective application of psychological theory to inform practice within sport and exercise settings?
  4. Adopt a problem-focused approach to address challenges and issues within the sport and exercise setting through an understanding of psychological theory.
