Brief Description

This module will focus on the application of physiology to exercise, health and sports performance. Current practice in these areas will be evaluated and the strengths and weaknesses of competing strategies discussed. The module will also consider the validity and reliability of appropriate physiological measurement techniques.

Indicative Syllabus

It is intended that the following topics will be covered: measurement validity and reliability; applied physiology of exercise and health; applied physiology of sports performance (including power and endurance); designing training programmes for elite athletes; designing training programmes for exercise and health; biochemical underpinning of exercise and sports performance.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Evaluate critically the underpinning physiology of elite sports performance and exercise for health.
  2. Evaluate and synthesise training and exercise techniques from a physiological perspective;
  3. Evaluate critically current practice in applied physiology for exercise, health and sports performance;
  4. Evaluate the relative merits of different strategies;
  5. Explain in detail the range of assessment procedures, and some of the precautions that ought to be taken to ensure the validity and reliability of the procedure.
