Brief Description

This module is designed to prepare, guide and support students to study effectively for academic progression beyond Foundation Degree level (Level 6).  The module is taken throughout the level 5 programme to ensure that students are given the appropriate opportunities to advance their personal development, academic study and researching skills.  Fundamental understanding of the principles of enquiry relating to literature searching, ethical and purposeful research design and project planning will be explored. Students will also be introduced to a range of skills and techniques for collecting and analysing data. Opportunities to engage with employers who use research to inform practice, will help Foundation Degree students contextualise the importance of research in sport.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. Academic study skills (e.g. evaluating peer-reviewed literature; constructing critical, reasoned and evidence-based arguments).
  2. Knowledge construction in sports disciplines and the purpose and value of research.
  3. Research design and planning
  4. Ethical considerations in research
  5. Methods for collecting and analysing data
  6. The role and responsibilities of the researcher

Research informed practice in sport.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

  1. Review contemporary literature in a defined area of sport research.
  2. Identify and justify an issue or phenomenon, relevant to work-based learning and/or employer, which would be worthy of academic research.
  3. Analyse relevant ethical issues that should be considered in quality research design.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the role of the researcher in effective research design.
  5. Demonstrate awareness of a range of appropriate data collection and analysis tools and techniques.
