Brief Description

This module investigates how policy affects the delivery of sport and physical activity. It will consider the impact of changes in policy for sport over time, and how this might be reflected in terms of the structures and organisations involved, their aims and objectives for sport, and the impact of this on delivery.

Indicative Syllabus

An overview of contemporary UK sport policy

Aims and objectives for sports development

Local structures for sports development and delivery

The types of organisations involved in sports development and delivery

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  1. Evaluate approaches to sport and physical activity in the context of national politics and social ideology;
  2. Examine trends and initiatives in the field of sports policy and sports development;
  3. Critically appreciate a range of major contemporary issues in relation to the role of sport in society, and how these have changed over time.
