Brief Description | This module examines the emergence and development of modern sport in both national and international contexts between the late nineteenth century and 1980s. The module focuses on the British social and cultural environment in an internationally comparative context, and explores uses of sports’ pasts in the present. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module explores the nature of historical analysis and thinking as well as crucial issues in the emergence in the late nineteenth century of modern codified sports through investigations of the social history of codification of games into sports and the central role of amateurism in sports history. Individual sessions consider the place and role of public schools, international and national governing bodies, urbanisation, commercial forces, relationships between international political demands and sports, the social significance of class, gender and ethnicity in British sports history and the role of nostalgia in public debates about sport practice and policy. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding On successful completion of the module the student should be able to demonstrate: a) a knowledge of key themes in the history of modern sport b) a familiarity with the historiographical debates central to an understanding of the social, political, cultural and economic forces shaping the history of modern sport c) the ability to evaluate historical evidence to construct a plausible historical argument. |
