Brief Description | This module is designed to analyse the claims made for sport in the context of the social inclusion agenda based on sport policy frameworks both historic and modern. The module develops a sociological investigation of sport to explore the concept of social inclusion and the potential impact that sport and physical activity may have in combating social exclusion. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module builds on the 1999 Policy Action Team 10 report (SEU/DCMS) to develop an analysis in this framework, including the contribution that sport and physical activity may have in terms of Health, Anti-social behaviour, Education, and Regeneration in [particularly] the UK context. In doing so, students will explore barriers and facilitators in sports participation, social inclusion and modern sport policy, sport devolution & modernisation, and monitoring, evaluation and evidence. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:...
1) appreciate and analyse the concepts of social justice, equality and social inclusion in the context of sport policy; 2) analyse the claims made for sport and physical activity as a social instrument. 3) appreciate and explain some social, economic and political theory, and its potential to explain the development and differentiation of sport and physical activity throughout society.
