Brief Description

This module will develop the knowledge gained through SPV403, and provide students with the opportunity to apply the theory and policy to a community setting. It will examine the social and political context driving the need for community provision and explore the role that professionals from different sectors play in developing appropriate initiatives.

Indicative Syllabus

The applied nature of this module will enable the students to understand and evaluate how physical activity is used in community-based initiatives to facilitate health, well-being and inclusion. The module will increase students’ awareness of the role of physical activity in diverse community settings, examining specifically the importance and complexities of partnership work in this context.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1)     Define the notion of community, specifically its meaning in the physical activity policy and practice context;

2)     Examine the range of community settings where physical activity provision is developed through policy and practice;

3)     Identify and evaluate the role of the physical activity and health professional within the multidisciplinary public health and physical activity context;

4)     Examine the role of partnership working in community-based physical activity for health initiatives;

Identify and evaluate good practice underpinning community-based physical activity and health initiative.
