Brief Description

This module will examine a range of issues in sport from a sociological perspective. Emphasis will be given to analysis and critical evaluation of the role of sport in contemporary society.

Indicative Syllabus

This module progresses the work undertaken in SPX103 in relation to the analysis of sport from a variety of sociological perspectives.  These competing theories are utilised to explore a range of issues in sport that may include: deviance; homophobia; the relationship between sport and identity construction; commercialisation; ‘race’ and gender.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 1.Explore the sociological basis and context of a number of issues which      question the role of sport in contemporary society;

 2.Appreciate the impact and role of sport upon groups and individuals;

 3.Apply sociological approaches to the explanation of the role of sport in        society;

 4.Think critically about, and debate, the role of sport in society;

 5.Collect information from a variety of sources; observe, read and

    comprehend the information and use it to develop a personal opinion.
