Brief Description | This module will examine a range of issues in sport from a sociological perspective. Emphasis will be given to analysis and critical evaluation of the role of sport in contemporary society. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module progresses the work undertaken in SPX103 in relation to the analysis of sport from a variety of sociological perspectives. These competing theories are utilised to explore a range of issues in sport that may include: deviance; homophobia; the relationship between sport and identity construction; commercialisation; ‘race’ and gender. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1.Explore the sociological basis and context of a number of issues which question the role of sport in contemporary society; 2.Appreciate the impact and role of sport upon groups and individuals; 3.Apply sociological approaches to the explanation of the role of sport in society; 4.Think critically about, and debate, the role of sport in society; 5.Collect information from a variety of sources; observe, read and comprehend the information and use it to develop a personal opinion.
