Brief Description | The first part of the module aims to develop an understanding of social divisions. Classic social divisions are then used as a way of thinking about sport in society. The latter part of the module analyses the concept of social exclusion and explores the potential impact that sport and physical activity may have in combating this. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module analyses the nature of social divisions such as gender, social class and ‘race’ and ethnicity. In so doing the module evaluates the contribution that sport and physical activity can make to social inclusion and in tackling issues such as sports participation, health inequalities, ant-social behaviour, educational opportunity and regeneration. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1) understand the nature of social divisions; 2) appreciate and analyse the concepts of social justice, equality and social inclusion in the context of sport policy; 3) analyse the claims made for sport and physical activity as a social instrument. |
