Available to those students studying Sports Education, Sports Coaching or Sport and Dance Education as any part of their course.

Brief Description

This module will emphasise the acquisition of knowledge and skills that can be applied to better understand physical literacy though gymnastic and dance activities. Students will be introduced to theoretical principles of human movement that can be used to observe and appreciate the performance of dance and gymnastic sequences. Students will develop core dance and gymnastic skills that can be included in their own performance.

This module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. It will allow them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of gymnastics and dance in the National Curriculum in physical education in different key stages. This module will also develop knowledge of health and safety issues associated with the teaching of gymnastic and dance activities.

This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

The module involves analysis of the fundamentals of human movement through theory and practical lectures. Applied subject knowledge is developed in a safe learning environment through personal participation, group work and peer observation culminating in gymnastic and dance performances.

 

This module also develops gymnastics and dance teaching skills. Specific gymnastics elements covered include: Progressions for gymnastics floor skills, travelling, flight, weight bearing, rotation and sequencing. Specific dance elements: analysis of movement principles, actions, spatial, dynamics sequencing through safe practice in different educational dance styles/forms and choreographic techniques.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

·         Demonstrate a broad theoretical understanding of how principles of movement apply in the development of dance and gymnastic activities and the creation of sequences of movement.

·         Plan, develop and perform movement sequences in dance and gymnastics, demonstrating physical literacy skills.

·         Analyse movement concepts and progressions through the development of a range of teaching resources.

·         The application of teaching and learning-based knowledge to underpin an evidence based approach to practice.

·         Develop creative and innovative approaches to planning teaching and learning experiences.

Demonstrate appropriate professional standards within a sport education setting.
