Brief Description

The aim of this module is to investigate how the components of fitness can be tested. The metabolic, cardiovascular and respiratory responses to exercise will be studied through a series of laboratory and field- based workshops. Students will explore current recommendations for screening participants and carrying out standardized fitness tests to evaluate the major components of fitness in order to prescribe appropriate fitness programmes.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: health screening, measurement issues; assessment of body composition and assessment of cardiovascular and respiratory response to exercise.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Display practical competency whilst working in a laboratory or field-based setting
  2. Identify different elements of a fitness evaluation including the energy costs of physical activity, cardio-respiratory fitness, body composition and muscular fitness and flexibility
  3. Demonstrate awareness of risks associated with exercise participation and testing.
