Brief Description

This module will introduce the student to the training methods available to develop a range of fitness components, and the mechanisms responsible for training adaptation. Students will learn how to periodize training to develop a range of biomotor qualities.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will develop knowledge of the science and application of training methodology for athletes of different sporting profiles. Additionally, students will revisit and learn how to apply the science of periodization and concepts of monitoring of performance when developing training programmes for athletes.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand the mechanisms responsible for training adaptations following training for; strength, hypertrophy, speed, power, endurance, agility, flexibility, core stability/strength
  2. Utilise a range of different training methodologies to develop a specific fitness quality
  3. Recognise the application of biomechanical and physiological principles to strength and conditioning
  4. Understand and evaluate the merits of different training methods
  5. Understand in detail the mechanisms responsible for training adaptation
  6. Monitor and assess athletic development
