Brief Description

The aim of this module is to equipment Sports Therapy students with the skills needed to plan, develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programmes. These programmes will address the intrinsic risks factors that contributed to the injury, facilitate mechanotherapy to stimulate the healing process, and prepare the athlete to meet the physical requirements of the sport, exercise or occupation.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will study the risk factors associated with biomechanical stress, extrinsic forces and the physical demands inherent of motor skills common to sports and exercise. Students will apply training principles to the injured athlete including methods of improving range of movement, flexibility, muscular endurance, strength, power, hypertrophy, speed and proprioception. Students will learn to develop comprehensive rehabilitation programmes that should return the athlete to full periodised training and sports participation.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand the effect of load on the healing process at a cellular level;
  2. Identify and appraise the intrinsic risk factors for musculoskeletal injury and integrate corrective exercise in to the rehabilitation programme;
  3. Plan, develop and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation programme that considers the damaged tissue, the biomechanical considerations of the surrounding joint and the physiological demands of the sport, exercise or occupation, in both an individual and group rehabilitation context;
  4. Review and analyse contemporary research in the area of sport, exercise and occupational rehabilitation;
