Brief Description

This module aims to cover a wide range of therapeutic modalities used within the Sports Therapy profession. Modalities such as protective and corrective equipment and electrotherapy will be covered in practical sessions. The importance of legalisation, documentation and record keeping are also explored.

Indicative Syllabus

Student will familiarise themselves with the safe and effective application of protective and corrective equipment such as casts, splints, braces, slings, immobilisation devices, assisted walk and crutches, orthoses and prostheses. Students will also be taught how to tape and strap peripheral soft tissue and joints for injury prevention and injury protection. Electrotherapeutic modalities will also be taught including therapeutic Ultrasound, Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and Interferential Therapy.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Evaluate and apply appropriate assisted, protective and corrective equipment as a result of research evidence;
  2. Identify appropriate comparative observational clinical signs and symptoms associated with allergic, thermal and chemical reactions of the skin and determine when to refer to other healthcare professionals?
  3. Evaluate and implement safe and effective practice within electrotherapeutic modalities as a result of research findings;
  4. Plan and apply appropriate treatment based on the clinical needs of individual patients;
  5. Maintain comprehensive treatment records in line with Data Protection and professional body requirements.
