Brief Description

This module provides an in-depth knowledge of the upper and lower limb anatomy and pathophysiology of soft tissue, bones and joints. It also presents a comprehensive detailed approach to clinical assessment of presenting injury. The role of the sports therapist, in assessment and prevention of injury, is considered in detail.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: introduction to sport specific injury assessment techniques; recognition of common sports injury signs and symptoms; clinical assessment: based on in-depth knowledge of functional anatomy; accurate patient history; observation and a comprehensive physical examination; utilisation of appropriate tests and physical examination; recognition of the need for onward medical referral; advanced soft tissue techniques.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Describe fully and understand the procedures for clinical evaluation and typical symptoms of common injuries, trauma and illness, and analyse the reliability of those procedures;
  2. Command a broad understanding of the epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of a range of common sports injuries.
  3. Describe clearly the normal and abnormal neurological, physiological and psychological responses to injury and illness.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the immediate and delayed characteristic pathophysiology of common musculoskeletal injuries, illness and trauma associated with sport and exercise participation.
  5. Administer a range of motion, muscle and clinical special tests including objective clinical measurements when required and interpret the results of those tests.
  6. Identify appropriate comparative observable clinical signs and symptoms typically associated with musculoskeletal injuries, illness and trauma associated with sport and exercise participation.
