Brief Description

The module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the nature of physical activity promotion in primary care and the community within selected groups in society. It will be of particular relevance to students who have an interest in working in physical activity promotion in the future. The module will explore the physical activity pathways, exercise referral schemes and the planning of individualised exercise programmes to meet the needs of clients with a range of stable health conditions such as obesity. Students who possess a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (or equivalent) may be eligible to be examined in an industry recognised Exercise Referral award (additional certification fee will be payable).

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: national and regional policy in physical activity promotion; the pathology, signs, symptoms and treatments of ageing, obesity, hypertensions, diabetes and arthritic conditions; planning and delivery of individualised exercise programmes within these conditions.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand physical activity pathways and the role of exercise referral schemes within primary care and the community.
  2. Explain the signs, symptoms and basic pathology of specific stable conditions.
  3. Plan, deliver, and evaluate a safe and effective adapted physical activity programme personalised to individual client?s needs.
  4. Explain the benefits of engaging with physical activity for those with a range of stable health conditions.
  5. Describe the risks associated with exercise for specific conditions.
