Brief Description

The module aims to introduce analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on team sports and match analysis. The underpinning rational for the use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance is evaluated, and issues of validity and reliability are also considered prior to a focus on the practical application notational analysis technique.

Indicative Syllabus

This indicative content of the module will include: match analysis; time- motion analysis; measurement issues including validity and reliability; analysis and presentation of data; ethical principles and codes of conduct; systems and software for performance analysis; and evaluation of technologies.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Outline and evaluate the models for performance analysis of sport;
  2. Analyse and evaluate the basic principles of notation analysis;
  3. Develop practical notation systems for use in a sporting context;
  4. Assess the accuracy and precision of data generated by a notation system;
  5. Present information at the required level for an appropriate target audience.
