Brief Description

This module will consider the underpinning biochemistry and physiology of nutrition for health and sports performance. Study will involve lectures, tutorials and computer aided learning. The link between nutrition, health and nutrition and exercise performance is well established and students will be expected to examine recent literature that includes nutritional guidance in health, physical activity and sports performance contexts.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine the role of nutrition in the prevention of disease and the maintenance of good health and optimise sport and;exercise performance. Students will have the opportunity to analyse diets so specific recommendations appropriate to optimal health and physical activity can be made. The role of the diet will be explored in a wider societal context and will therefore be considered from a holistic perspective. Topics covered include: energy balance; the

macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate and protein); selected micronutrients; ergogenic aids; supplements, fluid balance and hydration. Students will learn to perform a dietary analysis using the CompEat dietary analysis software.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Appraise the sources of macronutrients, vitamins and minerals;
  2. Interpret the results of a dietary analysis;
  3. Employ the concept of energy balance in a sport, health and exercise contexts;
  4. Analyse the relationship between recommended nutrient intake values and sport, health and exercise;
  5. Illustrate the importance of fluid intake for health, sport and exercise performance.
  6. Appraise the evidence concerning the role of diet with standards of health, sport &exercise performance.
  7. Evaluate diets and be able to create food regimes to meet differing nutritional needs.
  8. Evaluate the importance of exercise to good health and the inter-relationship between diet and exercise.
