School Sport and Exercise
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 5
Pre-requisites Before taking this module you must pass SP4002
Co-requisites None
Restrictions Cannot be counted with module SPS209 and SPX209
Brief Description

This module examines the multifaceted relationship between human physiology and exercise. Consideration will be given to the major organ systems of the body and the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment during exercise. Particular emphasis will be placed on the acute responses and chronic adaptations of the human body to physical activity. Knowledge gleaned from this module will inform further study in the contexts of exercise for health as well as sport performance.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of this module will include: regulation of cardiovascular and ventilatory responses to exercise: hormonal responses to exercise; acid-base balance; exercise-induced alterations in skeletal muscle due to exercise; exercise metabolism; measurement of work, power, and energy expenditure.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the way the human body responds to exercise
  2. Demonstrate an awareness of areas where the knowledge base is most/least secure
  3. Show evidence of the skills required to monitor and evaluate human responses to exercise
  4. Appraise and interpret data from physiological tests, identifying common patterns and relationships.
