Brief Description

This module examines the role of Physical Education and School Sport in the lives of young people. Students will gain a broad understanding of the content of National Curriculum Physical Education (NCPE) in both primary and secondary schools and how this relates to current Government policy.  Students will consider the opportunities currently promoted for participation in school sport and the links between Physical Education, School Sport and Community through examples and case studies.  They will also consider how sporting talent is identified and nurtured. This module is intended for those students who would like to work in school sport development.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. An overview of Primary and Secondary National Curriculum for Physical Education (NCPE) content.
  2. Past and present school sport strategies.
  3. Organisations (and their partnerships) involved in the promotion of school sport opportunities.
  4. A range of programmes designed to promote participation of target groups in school sport.
  5. Programmes aimed at improving every young person’s experience of P.E.
  6. Promotion of competition in schools and the development of talented young athletes.
  7. Linking school sport to the curriculum; and schools to club sport.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

 

  1. Define the difference and links between School Sport and Physical Education.
  2. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the content of NCPE Primary and Secondary and its terminology.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of how past and present Government policy has influenced the content of NCPE and the opportunities for young people’s participation in PE and school sports.
  4. Identify a range of organisations that work independently and in partnerships with schools to provide young people with sports opportunities.
  5. Identify the aims of programmes designed to improve young people’s experiences of P.E. and promote participation in School Sport.
  6. Identify P.E. and School Sport strategies for developing talented young athletes.
