Brief Description

This module is designed to prepare and support students to study effectively for their foundation degree programme and produce coursework assessments that meet with School standards. While the general themes introduced will be transferable, students will be encouraged to focus the application of these skills to their course subject area.  The module is taken throughout the first year to ensure that students are given the appropriate opportunities to advance their personal and academic study skills and to introduce them to the concept and value of researching in order to prepare them for continuing undergraduate study.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. Key transferable study skills (e.g. written and verbal communication, constructing reasoned arguments, referencing, literature searching, working independently and in groups). 
  2. Understanding and interpreting a range of research approaches, reported in peer-reviewed literature.
  3. An understanding of research traditions.
  4. An introduction to approaches used in researching sport and exercise.

An introduction to research techniques and conventions that may be used to collect and describe data. 

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

  1. Apply a range of key transferable study and communication skills to produce assignment work
  2. Demonstrate how appropriate academic sources for study and research findings can be accessed and used by undergraduate students.
  3. Interpret key research findings in peer-reviewed publications;
  4. Demonstrate awareness of approaches and techniques that are commonly used for primary research in sport and exercise disciplines
