Brief Description

This module introduces students to the underpinning values and rationale/s for sports development.  In doing so, it offers an overview of agencies and organisations involved with sports development, and also methods of sports development practice. It examines the links between current political ideology and the impact this has on those who work in sports development.

Indicative Syllabus
  1. The historical context of sports development
  2. The key values and definitions that underpin sports development
  3. Central government’s influence on sports development practice
  4. The organisation of sport at a regional and local level

An overview of current policy and practice in elite level sport, community sport, school sport and physical activity and health.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

 

  1. Define and describe the key values that underpin sports development
  2. Explain what political ideology is, and how it affects sports development practice
  3. Outline current sports policy, and associated policies
  4. Outline the role of central government, local government, commercial, voluntary, and third sector organisations in relation to sports development
  5. Discuss methods of engaging communities in sport and physical activity participation

Highlight examples of good sports development practice from elite sport, or community sport, or school sport, or physical activity and health.
