Brief Description

This module introduces students to the concepts and theories that inform safe, effective, purposeful and fun practical sports leadership and coaching practice appropriate to a range of sports development target groups. Theoretical underpinning will be applied in practical contexts designing, planning, leading and evaluating a wide range of innovative sport, play and fitness themed activities.     

Indicative Syllabus

1.     An overview of both local and national agencies and organisations responsible for training sports leaders and coaches and providing community sporting opportunities for participants.

2.     Fundamental components of designing, planning, organising and leading safe, purposeful, effective, innovative and fun sports leadership activities, basic sports coaching sessions and fitness sessions.

3.     An introduction to theories and concepts of coaching and skill learning principles.

4.     Introduction to the fundamental principles and components of fitness.

5.     The advantages and disadvantages of using a range of different competition format when planning a sports or fitness event. 

Introduction to a variety of innovative and creative co-operative, inclusive, adaptive and multi-cultural sports activities designed to meet the needs of a range of sports development target groups.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:.

 

1.     Identify a range of organisations responsible for the delivery of sports leadership and coaching activities in the UK

2.     Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fundamental sports leadership, coaching and fitness concepts;

3.     Apply knowledge of the principles of effective leadership and coaching in the planning organisation and delivery of a variety of safe, purposeful, effective and fun practical activities appropriate to the needs of a specified target group;

4.     Apply knowledge of fitness principles in the competent delivery of a practical fitness activity for a specified target group;

Demonstrate understanding of effective sports leadership and coaching in the observation and evaluation of a range of practical sports activities
