Brief Description | This module will contextualise the contemporary landscape of physical activity, exercise and health development by outlining and recognising key changes in our understanding of the relationship between physical activity and health. Emphasis will be placed on the political and social changes which have underpinned policy developments in the area of preventative public health. The module will be of value to students who have an interest in the area of physical activity and health, specifically how practice and provision have developed. This introductory module also offers the foundations for the physical activity and health pathway that continues throughout the Sports Development degree programme. |
Indicative Syllabus | The syllabus will open with an overview of significant events; social-cultural shifts and political changes post 1945 to present day that have been pertinent to the development of physical activity and health. Other areas of importance to complement the syllabus will include: health promotion; the fundamentals of partnership working; social marketing; national and local policy and practices; physical activity practitioner perspectives of local physical activity schemes and programmes. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1)outline the key developments within physical activity and health policy and practice; 2) describe the social and political changes that have facilitated the development of a relationship between physical activity and health; 3) explain the relationship between physical activity and health and its importance in contemporary health promotion; 4) appreciate the multidisciplinary nature of physical activity and health provision and practice. |
