Brief Description

This module examines the role of sport and exercise in modern society. A range of theoretical approaches employed by sociologists are used in order to investigate such issues as 'race', gender and class in sport and exercise. This module will be of value to students who have an interest in sport and exercise and their role in contemporary society. The module lays the basis for further study in socio-cultural aspects of sport and exercise.

Indicative Syllabus

Using sociology to understand sport and exercise; Theoretical approaches to sport and exercise; Barriers to participation; ‘Race’, ethnicity and sport; Gender and sport; Social class and sport.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

a) appreciate the nature of sport & exercise and their relationship with society;

b) describe the key sociological approaches to the analysis of sport and exercise in society;

c) consider a range of major contemporary issues in relation to the role of sport and exercise in society.
