Brief Description

This module will introduce students to the concept of employability and aims to develop necessary skills for a career in sports coaching or related environments. Students will discuss and relate pertinent employability issues in relation to the coaching environment. Students will undertake a placement for a minimum of 30 hours.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will provide students with the theoretical underpinning necessary to understand the value of coaching sector skills development and its relevance to their professional development and employability. It will provide opportunities for students to engage with a range of sports coaching employers.  In preparation for their sports placements students will explore issues pertinent to sports leadership, emergency first aid, child protection, health and safety and legislation pertinent to particular populations. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the challenges encountered throughout the module and placement experience and their personal strengths in this respect. This module will introduce students to Personal Development Planning (PDP) and the concept of lifelong learning and skills development.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to…:

·         Demonstrate evidence of personal development pertinent to employability skills.

·         Recognise the relationship between personal skills development and employability.

·         Demonstrate knowledge of key legislation and guidelines relating to the role of sports coaches, including health and safety, risk assessment, codes of conduct and the rules and regulations of sport.

·         Evaluate his or her performance during the sport placement and identify key learning incidents and opportunities that occurred.

·         Demonstrate understanding of what skills, qualities and qualifications are required by employers in the student's chosen experience.

Demonstrate and reflect on his or her employment prospects for the future and develop a coherent personal professional development action plan.
