Brief Description | This module aims to introduce students to the major principles that underpin coaching practice. Students will develop an understanding of the variety of roles that are undertaken by a coach and the skills needed to coach .Students will investigate the importance of applying a range of theoretical principles and systems in order to coach effectively.
This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance). |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will investigate the importance of developing coaching philosophies along with an appreciation of coaching holistically; the knowledge of systems (qualitative and quantitative) that enable sports performance to be analysed from a technical, tactical and strategic perspective; the knowledge of means to profile individual performers to assess their strengths and weaknesses as performers: theories of motor learning and their application to the development of skilled performance within sport; the nature of the relationship between coaches and athletes: the influence of motivation on sports performance and how motivation can be enhanced through a variety of techniques and exercises; the function of effective goal setting as a means of enhancing motivation and performance |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
· Appreciate the roles of a coach and the differences in roles of various coaching positions. · Recognise the role of the coach in developing the athlete/team. · Identify their own strategic objectives and coaching philosophy. · Appreciate the importance of integrating sport science and pedagogical principles in coaching practice. Explore the fundamental theoretical bases that underpin coaching. |
