Brief Description

This module aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of teaching and coaching. The module will explore practice skills, introduce terminology and methods appropriate to sports pedagogy. The module will expose students to contemporary underpinning theory regarding sports coaching and education aiming to inform practice. Students will reflect upon their and others coaching and teaching and understand the importance of reflection in the teaching and coaching environment.

 

This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

The module will introduce different teaching and coaching methods and strategies and their application in practical environments. Students will analyse and appreciate the application of different forms of communication and how different methods can be applied to different contexts. This module provides a foundation for students interested in exploring the differences and similarities in knowledge, skills, and vocational opportunities that underpin the professional development of teachers, coaches and other pedagogic practitioners. Students will be engaged in the practical outworking of pedagogic theory.

A student passing this module should be able to...

·         Understand different teaching and coaching methods and models and their application to practice.

·         Apply theoretical knowledge in practical teaching and coaching contexts.

·         Reflect upon their own development as a teacher or coach.

·         Demonstrate competence in practical teaching and coaching contexts including an awareness of appropriate session content.

·         Demonstrate and awareness of health and safety considerations and recognition of learners needs.

·         Understand the different forms of communication integral to the teaching and coaching process.
