Brief Description

This module gives students an overview and encourages critical thinking of the provision of services, facilities and equipment designed to enhance health, fitness and wellbeing. This will include an examination of primary health care provision, lifestyle issues and the role of the fitness industry. It will include practical experience of a range of studio based fitness and health classes.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: concepts of fitness, health and well-being; health policy/National Health Service/history of medicine; psychological aspects of behaviour change; working in the fitness industry; commodification and the fitness industry; practical studio (class) based approaches to health and fitness.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Express a broad understanding of and the relationship between the concepts of health, fitness and wellbeing
  2. Outline the provision of both health and exercise provision in the public and private sector.
  3. Reflect on the variety of exercise opportunities available and suggest different approaches for different target groups.
  4. Discuss the effects of lifestyle issues such as stress, smoking and alcohol on the population and suggest strategies to ameliorate their effects.
  5. Understand the nature, rationale, benefits and pitfalls of the commercial underpinnings of the fitness industry.

Special Assessment Requirements

Students will be expected to participate where possible, in a range of physical activities. However, level of performance in these activities is not a criterion of success in the module. Appropriate clothing and footwear required.
