Brief Description

The module aims to explore the underpinning biochemistry and physiology of nutrition for fitness and health. Students will develop knowledge of the National Guidelines for nutrition, and their application to a balanced diet. Students will explore the analysis and construction of diets to benefit health and exercise. The module will involve lectures, tutorials and computer-aided dietary analysis.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include an exploration of: macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate and protein); micronutrients; energy balance; hydration strategies; ergogenic aids; and dietary analysis.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Identify the sources of macronutrients, vitamins and minerals;
  2. Explain the recommended nutrient intake values;
  3. Describe the importance of hydration for fitness and sports performance;
  4. Describe the maintenance of energy balance;
  5. Interpret the results of a dietary analysis.
