Brief Description

The main focus of this practical-based module is to introduce students to the fundamentals of physiological and movement assessment, which is at the cornerstone of effective strength and conditioning provision. Students will also be exposed to core gym-based exercises.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will develop holistic skills required to perform physiological testing and fundamental movement screening for athletes within a strength and conditioning environment. Students will learn the methods of analysing the data that is collected, and how to perform basicstatistical analysis. Additionally, SPR students will be introduced to key gym-based lifting techniques to develop strength and power.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand and implement key fitness testing protocols inherent to the analysis of athletes
  2. Interpret results from basic statistical analysis of collected data, and produce effective and appropriate results for the athlete and other members of a typical sport science support team
  3. Evaluate the importance of coaching philosophy and the athlete centred approach to coaching
  4. Demonstrate safe, effective and appropriate strength and conditioning training exercises
  5. Identify key technical competencies within those exercise techniques learnt within the module
