Brief Description

This module will introduce the student to fundamental skills required for designing structured and periodised strength and conditioning programmes and individual strength and conditioning sessions.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will develop skills in the fundamental application of sports physiology, biomechanics and coaching principles to the assessment of physical preparation for optimal sports performance. Organisational skills in relation to the structuring of periodised macro, meso and microcycles will also be developed. Additionally, issues surrounding health and safety, and the application of sports psychology to strength and conditioning will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Identify the predominant metabolic pathway used in a variety of sports;
  2. Identify the common movement patterns used, and typical injury incidence and etiology in a variety of sports;
  3. Describe the proprioceptive and neural control mechanisms involved in functional human movement;
  4. Offer examples of planning variables in relation to the periodisation of strength and conditioning programmes;
  5. Recognise the application of biomechanical and physiological principles to strength and conditioning;
  6. Understand the role of sport psychology and psychological skills for strength and conditioning, with specific reference to injury rehabilitation;
  7. Interpret specified guidelines for the scientific assessment, monitoring and training of athletes, including NSCA guidelines and health and safety legislation.
