Brief Description

The module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and implement conditioning programs appropriate for athletes across a range of sports. This module will focus on the design of physical conditioning programs using a variety of conditioning techniques and equipment, and the physiological effects of these to enable the student to apply appropriate techniques specific to the demands of an array of sports. The module will combine theoretical and practical components.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: the various components of fitness; techniques to assess components of fitness; normal physiological responses to exercise; the safe and effective use of a range of fitness equipment; concepts in the design of conditioning programs; physiological demands of a variety of common sports; abnormal or unhealthy responses to exercise, and safety concerns.

Learning Outcomes s

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Discuss the components of a comprehensive fitness regime appropriate for of in-season and off-season physical conditioning and training
  2. Understand the role of standard physical fitness tests, contemporary testing equipment and accepted test protocols and measurements to include but not limited to:
  3. Discuss the physiological responses to resistance and weight training programmes on all of the body tissues and cells and the techniques and principles available to improve these responses.
  4. Demonstrate the principles for organising training sessions with specific regard to minimisation of injury and illness risk factors.
  5. Demonstrate the safe instruction and operation of resistance and weight training equipment.
  6. Demonstrate the application of appropriate in-season and off- season physical conditioning programmes.
