Brief Description

This module will introduce students to the basic principles of injury risk, pathology, the healing process and their relevance to a range of common sports injuries. This module will focus on in-depth knowledge of upper and lower limb anatomy and palpation of bony landmarks. The module will consist of both theoretical and practical components, giving students the opportunity to develop a range of practical skills.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: the role of the Sports Therapist; principles and concepts of movement; identification of anatomical landmarks & palpation; risk factors for injury; pathophysiology of soft tissue injuries; physical examination; clinical assessment based on in-depth knowledge of functional anatomy and accurate patient history.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical signs and symptoms of common sports injuries;
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate use of a range of a range of therapeutic modalities and the normal and abnormal injury response to them;
  3. Command an extensive knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy pertinent to sports injuries;
  4. Apply techniques for the location and comparative palpation of key anatomical structures;
  5. Administer appropriate range of motion and muscle techniques;
  6. Identify clinical signs associated with common sports injuries
