Brief Description

This module aims to develop and consolidate skills for sports massage.

The module will introduce students to the theoretical physiological / anatomical underpinning and practical application of massage techniques within the sport setting.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of the module will include: roles and responsibilities of a sports therapist; identification of contraindications to treatment and subsequent onward referral; biological systems relevant to sport message; and application of massage techniques.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Identify the professional requirements of a Sports Therapist;
  2. Describe contraindications to treatment and the clinical reasoning for onward referral;
  3. Understand the physiological effects of Sports Massage techniques upon the biological systems;
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of soft tissue and massage techniques appropriate to the stage of tissue healing and sporting environment.
