Brief Description

This module aims to qualify Sports Therapy students to work as pitchside or sports first aiders. Students will learn how to deal with a number of life-threatening and potentially life threatening injuries in a safe, appropriate and procedural manner. Students will also study the legal requirements and professional requirements of working as a Pitchside or sports first aider.

Indicative Syllabus

Within this module students will study how to deal with sports first emergencies. Students will be taught how to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), apply a defibrillator, recognise spinal injuries, assess for Concussion and manage a bleeding casualty. Students will be taught how to develop Emergency Action Plans for their sport, the first aid equipment needed in specific sports how to refer a player for emergency medical attention. Students will also learn how to determine if a player is safe to continue participating or needs to be removed from play.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Recognise and implement an Emergency Action Plan for dealing with an unconscious, non-breathing casualty
  2. Recognise and implement an Emergency Action Plan for a suspected spinal injury
  3. Recognise and implement an Emergency Action Plan for a concussed or bleeding player
  4. Recognise and implement an Emergency Action Plan a player extrication 
  5. Understand and adhere to Health and Safety Executive, National Governing Body and Professional Body regulations regarding First Aid in Sport
  6. Medical management of common medical conditions e.g. asthma.
