Brief Description

This module will introduce students to the fundamentals of research in their chosen area of study. Students will explore the purposes of research in their particular field and consider the subsequent impact on the principles of project design, data collection and analysis. Students will be introduced to a range of typical approaches to research that will inform their studies, and they will develop core academic skills such as literature searching, referencing, data presentation and scientificwriting.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content of this module will include: approaches to research; the purpose of research; literature searching, gathering trustworthy information; data presentation; reporting research; identifying and interpreting key research findings; and APA referencing.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand the varying approaches to research and research design;
  2. Recognise how research findings are published and presented within their field;
  3. Demonstrate the ability to locate, interpret and reference key research findings in trustworthy publications
  4. Demonstrate awareness of the various types of data that might be encountered within their field;
  5. Appreciate the manner in which trustworthy data can be generated and interpreted;
  6. Select and present the most appropriate method for summarising or presenting data.
