Brief Description

The module serves as an introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL/TESOL) and covers the areas of language awareness, methodology and lesson planning.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will be of interest to students who may be considering a career in TEFL. It is assumed that much of the content will be new to students, including language awareness and methodology. The module covers three areas: Language Awareness which includes development of grammatical terminology and analysis of meaning and use. Methodology which includes how to teach language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Lesson planning and management which considers the implications of methodology when planning lessons.

The module does not provide a recognised professional qualification, however successful students will receive an in house certificate from Cheltenham International Language Centre (CILC).

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding.
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
1.  Demonstrate a theoretical knowledge of  a range of English language components including grammatical structures and lexis (vocabulary)
2.  Demonstrate understanding of ELT terminology relating to form, meaning and language use
3.  Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of methodology for different lesson types and how lessons are structured.
4.  Demonstrate understanding of the phonemic chart and apply this to a specific group of learners



ii. Skills. 
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
1.  Critically evaluate student language based on their development and extended knowledge of language.
2.  Apply theoretical knowledge of language learning to teaching, describing and checking language concepts.
3.  Critically analyse a number of texts types in order to evaluate appropriacy for students
4.  Reflect on teaching models in order to select and design appropriate tasks to develop relevant skills and sub skills
5.  Plan a specific lesson with reference to methodology and theory6.  Identify areas of linguistic difficulty for a student in order to design tasks for improvement.
