Brief Description

This module concentrates on practical communication for general, social and vocational purposes. In addition to listening and speaking skills, emphasis is also given to the written language and the development of the ability to deal with issues of general interest in Spanish.

Indicative Syllabus

This module provides further practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will deal with more complex texts and will be expected to convey information in the target language in greater detail than at previous levels. In addition, students will study grammar with a view to broadening their background knowledge of the linguistic structures they are using.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Use Spanish in a broad range of social and vocational situations.
b) Understand and use all major elements of Spanish structures and vocabulary.
c) Understand both the written and spoken word in a very wide range of contexts, and relay the content thereof.
d) Communicate orally and in writing in some depth in a variety of contexts.



ii. Skills
Communication and Literacy: effective foreign-language communication, both orally and in writing for tasks of varying complexity in a range of situational contexts.
Problem solving: through the application of linguistic and contextual knowledge in order to complete a range of tasks of varying complexity.
Independent learning and working: effective self-management through preparation for classes and continuous self-directed learning.
Working with others: effective work in pairs and teams for paired assignments, role-plays etc. General intellectual skills: understanding of a linguistic system other than that of one’s native language; development of communicative repertoire in the foreign language; enhanced societal and geographical general knowledge.
Specific vocational skills: ability to work effectively with Spanish speaking people and media.
