Brief Description

This module will focus on debates and/or techniques at the forefront of practice in the applied sport and exercise sciences. Debates or techniques may be interdisciplinary in nature or specific to physiological, biochemical or biomechanical aspects of applied sport and exercise. Measurement and analysis approaches are often a key element of debates or technical advances. Students will focus on the applied implications of emerging knowledge for sports performance and health.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will examine:

  1. The range of relevant literature and the importance of the peer review process;
  2. critical review of current debates in the sport and exercise science literature;
  3. the evidence base for interventions in sport and exercise;
  4. the application of knowledge from current debates to sport performance and health contexts (this may include laboratory practical sessions).
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a familiarity with current debates and/or technical advances in the applied sport and exercise sciences;
  2. critically evaluate literature relating to the relevant sport and exercise sciences;
  3. use literature innovatively to develop a robust evidence base for interventions in exercise and sport;
  4. become familiar with the nuances of current debate and/or technical advances in the applied sport and exercise sciences;
  5. competently communicate complex debates and their implications for practice in a written and oral form.
