Brief Description | The aim of this module is to introduce students to a variety of manual therapy techniques used in the treatment of peripheral and vertebral joint injuries. For peripheral and vertebral joint injuries students will be taught Maitlands vertebral and peripheral joint mobilisation techniques. This module will also focus on the detailed functional anatomy of the trunk and the common injuries associated with this area in the sporting environment. In the practical element of this module will also develop student skills in vertebral assessment, including neurological assessment and vertebral manual therapy techniques. Students will also critique the evidence on electrotherapy and demonstrate the application of these techniques All assessment is non-compensatory. Students must pass all elements of assessment in order to get a pass grade for the module. |

Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: a) Recognise and diagnose the biomechanical causes of movement restrictions of peripheral joints; b) Distinguish between common epidemiology, aetiology and pathophysiology of peripheral and vertebral joint injury; c) Appraise the normal and abnormal neurological, physiological and psychological responses of soft tissue and peripheral joint techniques; d) Select, justify and apply appropriate manual therapy techniques for the management of peripheral and vertebral joint problems and apply these safely and effectively; e) Critically appraise the evidence base for the application of appropriate manual therapies. f) Recognise the comparative observable clinical signs typically associated with common injuries/ illnesses to facilitate accurate diagnosis; g) Recognise and apply in depth anatomy and function of the spine and trunk to the injured patient; h) Select and implement an examination and assessment of patient presenting with back, spine or trunk injury, to include range of motion assessment, manual muscle testing, ligament stress testing, special testing and neurological testing. i) Use critical analysis in the selection of appropriate manual therapy techniques for the management of vertebral joint disorders and pathologies, and apply these safely and effectively. i) Appraise the risk factors associated with acquired postural abnormalities. j )Appraise, select and reflect upon appropriate electrotherapeutic modalities for specific patient conditions |
