Brief Description

The module will enable students to undertake a critical exploration of how sport and physical activity policy and practice are informed by sports-specific and broader strategic drivers (i.e. the Equality Act). The module will examine the key organisations and policies which shape contemporary practice. In particular the student will be able to apply theories and techniques of strategic appraisal to the evaluation of approaches to policy at different levels of governance and within diverse settings.Furthermore students will be encouraged to reflect on their role in the policy process and how they, as current or future sports professionals, can shape the strategic direction of provision.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will consider: 

  • The relationship between political values and the nature of sport and physical activity policy outputs;
  • The contemporary political and policy context to the provision of sport and physical activity programmes;
  • The role of the sports professional in shaping strategy; and
  • The utility of strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation tools to the appraisal of sport and physical activity strategies
Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: 

  • Review critically the structures, processes and agencies involved in the development of sport and physical activity policy;
  • Critique the relationship between political values and policy outputs;
  • Apply theories and techniques of strategic appraisal to relevant sport and physical activity policies and practice;
  • Evaluate critically the role of the sports professional in the strategic planning of sports and physical activity provision;
  • Examine the implications of contemporary sport and physical activity-related strategies for contemporary practice
